Working title

Instrumental Science

The Science of the form, function, expression and transformation of instrument playing

The aim of the planned dissertation is to present a new research branch called ‘instrumental science’. At the heart of this research will be analyses of film and photographic material of instrumentalists. This visual material will be examined according to various formal, functional-physiological and artistic criteria. The insights gained will be compared and contrasted with the statements by instrumentalists and the sources in instrumental pedagogic literature. In the dissertation, the film and photography analyses will be undertaken, commented on and assessed for their further research potential for the different scientific research areas. The section on ‘transformation’ concerns the practical relevance of the possibility of introducing instrumental scientific research into curricula. There are around 450 selected research results available for the dissertation, which all address new aspects not yet mentioned in the specialist literature. The working archive contains more than 2,000 papers on instrumental didactics. I am also working with a body of several hundred films and around 5,000 photographs and drawings of instrumentalists. The books have already been copied several times and stored in a thematic classification system.

Between 1999 and 2002 I conducted numerous film interviews with famous musicians and instrument teachers in Europe and the United States.
